Situation Overview
A rapid assessment jointly conducted by USAID, WFP, FAO and the Office of the Prime Minister to monitor the impact of El Niño-induced drought in Kunene region reveals a rural to urban migration pattern which could contribute to development of squatter settlements and crime increase in urban areas.
Amid worsening hunger triggered by El Niño weather event, the Government of Namibia plans to introduce schools meals to secondary schools in addition to pre- and primary schools which are part of the national School Feeding program. Namibia is one of few countries in southern Africa which has transitioned its School Feeding program from being reliant on external funding to a sustainable model that is fully funded and managed by the government, according to WFP.
